COMMUNITY VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

 We welcome you to The Community Fund Volunteer Forum and hope that you will learn about the various volunteer opportunities in and around our Bronxville, Eastchester, Tuckahoe community. The strength and vitality of our community depends on each and every one of us!

Listed below are various volunteer opportunities with The Community Fund, our member agencies, and other community organizations.

The Community Fund of Bronxville, Eastchester, Tuckahoe, Inc.

Adult and Teen Volunteers

The Community Fund provides financial, administrative and marketing support to over 30 local social service agencies and community initiatives in the Bronxville 10708, Eastchester, and Tuckahoe area.

Opportunities: Agency Evaluation, Fund Raising, Annual Golf Outing, Administration

  • Agency Evaluation: review existing or new agencies and projects serving the Bronxville, Eastchester, Tuckahoe community to determine if the services meet community priorities for Fund grants as well as provide on-going support to the agency or project.
    Time commitment: 2 hours per month February-March.


  • Fund-raising: help contact community residents and businesses to educate and inform them of the nature and importance of the Fund’s activities.
    Time commitment: 2-3 hours per month September through December.

  • Golf Committee: organize and market the spring golf outing to golfers and business sponsors. Time Commitment: 2-3 hours per month December through May.

  •  Administration: help in office, especially coordination of mailings. Time commitment: flexible.

     

    Bereavement Center of Westchester

    Adult Volunteers
    The Bereavement Center of Westchester is a not-for-profit, grief-support program for children, teens and adults.

      Opportunities: Facilitate bereavement support groups for Tree House Program for children, between the ages of 4 & 18 who have last a parent or sibling, and their surviving parent-guardian.

      Skills/Experience: No professional skills needed, only the desire to help.

      Training: 21-hour training, 7 three-hour per week evening sessions (begins in October)

      Time commitment: At least one 8-week session per year (4 hours, 5:30-9:30 PM, for 8 consecutive weeks)

Teen Volunteers
BYC provides high school students opportunity for community service, leadership and healthy social activities.

  Opportunities: Students volunteer for opportunities such as mentoring at Andrus children’s residence, staffing SE Consortium basketball games, delivering food to NYC homeless to homebound seniors, helping at Westhab playgroups for children of battered women, organizing Village Halloween parade.

  Skills/Experience: Patience and kindness.

Cancer Support Team

Adult Volunteers
Cancer Support Team (CST) provides in-home support services to cancer patients, at no charge and without regard to insurance coverage. Services include nursing care management, counseling, education transportation and financial assistance.

  Opportunities: Transporting patients to medical appointments, friendly visiting, assisting with office and fund raising tasks.

College Careers provides post-secondary educational counseling and services to underprivileged youth.

  Opportunities: Administrative assistance, publicity and student follow-up services

  Skills/Experience: Administrative, public relations, fund-raising and program services skills.

  Time commitment: Approximately 10 hours per week on a seasonal basis.

Teen Volunteers
Student Government Assoc. sponsors "homeless runs" to NYC locations and other outreach. Rotary Club sponsors various local and more distant community service activities.

  Opportunities: SGA Outreach welcomes food & clothing donations and volunteers. Rotaract Events: Please call.

Eastchester Citizen Corps.

The Eastchester Citizen Corps trains community residents to assist families, neighbors and emergency service workers during local, county or national disasters.

  Opportunities: Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) leader or member, administrator, safety educator, recruitment volunteer or organizer.

  Skills/Experience: None required. CPR training, first aid and organizational skills are beneficial.

  Training: 20 hour training course provided (days or nights in two-hour segments).

  Time commitment: Flexible.

Eastchester CAP provides a variety of services for children, families and individuals, including a thrift shop and information and referrals for employment opportunities.

Eastchester Interact Club

Eastchester Senior Nutrition Program is a senior citizens center and a home-delivered meals program.

  Opportunities: Deliver hot noontime meals to homebound elderly Monday through Friday.

  Time commitment: 10:45 to 12:00 Noon, once a week or more.

Eastchester Volunteer Ambulance Corps (EVAC)

EVAC is a non-profit volunteer ambulance service that provides emergency medical services to residents, merchants and visitors throughout Eastchester, Tuckahoe and Bronxville.

  Opportunities: Assist EMTs and Paramedics in delivering emergency medical treatment to the sick and injured.

  Skills/Experience: None required.

  Training: CPR and First Aid provided by EVAC if needed.

  Time commitment: Flexible, however there is a minimum of 24 hours per month.

Provides permanent housing for nine men in recovery from severe drug and alcohol addiction who are also dealing with serious medical and/or psychiatric problems.

  Opportunities: Help with transporting residents to and from medical appointments, etc.

  Skills/Experience: Experience with people who are mentally ill or who have medical problems.

  Training: Visit house to meet residents and staff before making commitment

Habitat is a non-profit Christian ministry which encourages home ownership for low-income families through the development of housing constructed by volunteers from churches, synagogues and other groups working together with the new resident family.

  Opportunities: Construction, special events, mentoring families, site host & lunch preparation.

  Training: On-site construction training.

  Time commitment: Flexible, preferably minimum one day.

Heartsong provides no-cost music and art therapy programs to enhance the functioning level and improve the quality of life for children with moderate to severe disabilities.

  Opportunities: Volunteers assist therapists in helping to maximize each child’s potential through "hand over hand" support and gentle prodding.

  Skills/Experience: None required.

  Training: One formal training session per semester with weekly training with therapists.

  Time commitment: Minimum one hour per Saturday for 15 sessions Sept through Dec or Jan through June.

Family & Community Services- Juvenile Delinquency Prevention Program

JLAW works to reduce juvenile delinquency by offering a series of three in-school workshops designed to introduce 6th and 7th grade students to their rights and responsibilities under the Family Court system.

  Opportunities: Lead workshops for middle school children in districts throughout Westchester on the rights and responsibilities of young adolescents.

  Skills/Experience: No legal background required. Must be able to relate to and enjoy working with children.
